Paul Cézanne
1839 CE–1906 CE · Painter · Aix-en-Provence
Paul Cézanne was a French painter associated with Post-Impressionism. Born in Aix-en-Provence, he trained briefly in law before pursuing art, studying in Paris and exhibiting with the Impressionists in the 1870s. He worked closely with Camille Pissarro, then developed a distinct approach built on constructive brushstrokes, planes of color, and rigorous analysis of form. His subjects included still lifes, portraits, bathers, and repeated views of Mont Sainte-Victoire near his home. He worked largely in relative isolation in Provence in his later years. His methods were widely studied by early twentieth-century artists, including those associated with Cubism. He died in Aix-en-Provence in 1906.
