Franz Joseph I

Franz Joseph I was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary from 1848 until his death in 1916, a reign of 68 years, one of the longest in European history. He came to the throne during the revolutions of 1848 and presided over the transformation of his realm into the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary in 1867. His long rule was marked by military defeats, national tensions among the empire's many peoples, and personal tragedies within his family. His decision to go to war after the assassination of his heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in 1914 helped bring on the First World War; he died two years later.
