R. Aharon Leib Shteinman

R. Aharon Leib Shteinman (1914-2017), rosh yeshiva of Ponevezh and Gaavad of Bnei Brak, was the universally acknowledged leader of global Litvish Jewry during the final decade of his life — succeeding R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv as Gadol HaDor in 2012. Born in Brest-Litovsk and studied at Kletsk under R. Aharon Kotler, he escaped Europe to Switzerland in WWII. He settled in Bnei Brak in 1955 and taught at Ponevezh, Beit Medrash Gevoha (Lakewood), and the kollel of Brisk for over six decades.
His five-volume Ayelet HaShachar chiddushim on Shas became standard reference. He was known for personal asceticism — sleeping on a simple cot, refusing institutional buildings named after him, and continuing to give shiurim daily until weeks before his death at 104. His political stance on Haredi army-service and secular education was more moderate than the right-wing Yerushalmi camp; the Degel HaTorah party operated under his hashkafic direction.
