Norodom
1834 CE–1904 CE · Phnom Penh
Norodom (1834–1904) was the king of Cambodia, reigning from 1860 until his death in 1904. Facing pressure from neighboring Siam and Vietnam, he signed a treaty in 1863 that placed Cambodia under French protection, making it a protectorate within what became French Indochina. Over his reign French control over Cambodian administration steadily increased, particularly after further agreements in the 1880s. He remains recognized as the ancestor of Cambodia's later ruling line.
