Red Cloud (Maȟpíya Lúta)

Mahpiya Luta, known as Red Cloud, was a leader of the Oglala Lakota on the northern Plains. From 1866 to 1868 he led a successful campaign against U.S. forts along the Bozeman Trail in present-day Wyoming and Montana, a conflict remembered as Red Cloud's War. The United States agreed to abandon the forts and signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, which recognized Lakota control of a large territory including the Black Hills. In his later decades he worked through negotiation on behalf of his people, dying in 1909.
