Jules Verne was a French novelist, poet, and playwright whose adventure novels helped establish the science-fiction genre. Born in Nantes in 1828, he trained in law in Paris but turned to writing. Beginning with Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863), he produced the long series Voyages extraordinaires for publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel, including Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, and Around the World in Eighty Days. His narratives combined geography, technology, and exploration. He settled in Amiens, served on its city council, and continued writing until his death in 1905. He remains among the most translated authors in the world.
