Al-Kamil
1177 CE–1238 CE · Cairo
Al-Kamil (c. 1177-1238) was the Ayyubid sultan of Egypt from 1218 to 1238 and a son of al-Adil I. He led the defense of Egypt that defeated the Fifth Crusade at Damietta, during which he received a visit from Francis of Assisi. In 1229 he concluded the Treaty of Jaffa with the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, restoring Jerusalem to Christian control while Muslims retained the sanctuary of the Temple Mount. He died in 1238, after which the Ayyubid domains again fragmented among his kin.
