Taejo of Goryeo (Wang Geon)

Taejo of Goryeo (Wang Geon, 877-943) was the founding monarch of Korea's Goryeo dynasty, from which the modern name "Korea" derives. Originally a general serving a regional warlord, he established the Goryeo state in 918 and by 936 had reunified the Korean peninsula, ending the Later Three Kingdoms period. He pursued a policy of reconciliation toward former rivals and displaced aristocrats, patronized Buddhism, and left the "Ten Injunctions" as guidance for his successors; his dynasty would rule Korea for nearly five centuries.
