Emperor Taizu of Song (Zhao Kuangyin)

Emperor Taizu of Song, born Zhao Kuangyin, was a leading military commander of the Later Zhou who was raised to the throne by his troops in 960, founding the Song dynasty. Over the following years he reunified most of China, ending the fragmentation of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. To prevent the warlordism that had toppled the Tang, he brought the regional armies under central control and elevated the civil bureaucracy and examination-recruited scholar-officials.
