Abd al-Rahman III
890 CE–961 CE · Córdoba, Spain
Abd al-Rahman III (890-961) became Emir of Cordoba in 912 and reasserted central authority over the rebellious provinces of al-Andalus. On 16 January 929 he adopted the title of caliph, making Cordoba the seat of a third caliphate alongside the Abbasids of Baghdad and the Fatimids, who were then based at al-Mahdiya in Ifriqiya, and he reigned until 961. His long rule is regarded as a political and cultural high point of Umayyad al-Andalus, and he founded the palace-city of Medina Azahara near Cordoba. He was succeeded by his son al-Hakam II.
