Adolf Hitler

1889 CE1945 CE · Braunau am Inn, Austria

Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 until his suicide in 1945, ruling as Chancellor from 1933 and as combined head of state and government, styled Führer, from 1934. Leader of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party, he established a totalitarian regime that suppressed all opposition. He launched the Second World War in Europe with the invasion of Poland in 1939, a conflict that caused tens of millions of deaths. His regime carried out the Holocaust, the systematic, state-organized genocide of six million Jews, along with the mass murder of millions of other victims; he took his own life in Berlin as Allied forces closed in during the final days of the war.
