Benito Mussolini

1883 CE1945 CE · Predappio, Italy

Benito Mussolini was the founder of Italian Fascism and the authoritarian ruler of Italy from 1922 to 1943. After leading the Fascist movement to power in the March on Rome, he dismantled parliamentary democracy and established a one-party dictatorship. In 1938 his regime enacted antisemitic racial laws that stripped Italian Jews of civil rights, and he allied Italy with Nazi Germany, entering the Second World War on the Axis side in 1940. He was deposed in 1943 and headed a German-backed puppet state in northern Italy until he was captured and executed by Italian partisans in 1945.
