Federico García Lorca

Federico García Lorca was a Spanish poet and playwright of the generation of 1927. Born in rural Andalusia, he studied in Granada and joined the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, where he met figures including Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel. His verse collection Romancero gitano (1928) brought wide fame, and a 1929–1930 stay in New York — followed by a months-long visit to Cuba in spring 1930 — produced the posthumous Poeta en Nueva York. He also directed the touring theatre company La Barraca and wrote the tragedies Bodas de sangre, Yerma, and La casa de Bernarda Alba. Arrested by Nationalist forces early in the Spanish Civil War, he was shot near Granada in August 1936.
