George Gershwin

1898 CE1937 CE · Composer · Brooklyn (East New York), New York

George Gershwin, born Jacob Gershwine in Brooklyn, was an American composer and pianist who worked across popular song, musical theater, and the concert hall. He began as a Tin Pan Alley song plugger before writing shows with his brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin. His concert works include Rhapsody in Blue (1924), the Concerto in F, and the tone poem An American in Paris, drawn partly from a European visit. His opera Porgy and Bess (1935) set an English libretto to a through-composed score. In 1936 he moved to California for film work. He died in 1937 of a brain tumor, aged 38.
