George VI was King of the United Kingdom from 1936 until his death in 1952, and the last Emperor of India. He came to the throne unexpectedly following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII and reigned through the Second World War. During his reign the British Empire largely transformed into the Commonwealth, and India gained independence in 1947. He was succeeded by his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II.
