Abu al-Abbas al-Saffah (c. 721–754) was the first caliph of the Abbasid dynasty, proclaimed at Kufa in 749 after the movement that overthrew the Umayyads. His reign from 749 to 754 was spent consolidating Abbasid power, including the suppression of remaining Umayyad supporters. He died of illness in 754 and was succeeded by his brother al-Mansur.
