Abd al-Rahman I
731 CE–788 CE · Córdoba, Spain
Abd al-Rahman I (731-788) was an Umayyad prince who escaped the Abbasid overthrow of his dynasty in the East and made his way to the Iberian Peninsula. In 756 he seized Cordoba and established an independent Umayyad emirate in al-Andalus, ruling until his death in 788. Though he broke with the Abbasid caliphs politically, he did not claim the caliphal title, governing instead as emir. His line would rule al-Andalus for nearly three centuries.
