Emperor Xuanzong of Tang reigned from 712 to 756, the longest reign of the dynasty. His early 'Kaiyuan era' is remembered as a cultural and economic golden age, with flourishing poetry, music, and administration. In his later years, court favoritism and the rise of frontier commanders led to the catastrophic An Lushan Rebellion of 755, which shook the empire; the emperor fled the capital and abdicated, and the Tang never fully recovered its earlier strength.
