Pope St. Gregory III
?–741 CE · Syria
A Syrian by birth, learned in Greek and Latin and acclaimed pope by the Roman people during his predecessor's funeral procession, Gregory III was the last pope to seek confirmation of his election from the Byzantine exarch. He convened a Roman synod in 731 that solemnly condemned iconoclasm, deepening the rupture with Emperor Leo III, who retaliated by seizing papal patrimonies and transferring southern Italian and Illyrian dioceses to Constantinople's jurisdiction. Facing Lombard pressure, Gregory made a momentous appeal for aid to Charles Martel of the Franks — an early turn toward the Frankish alliance that would later reshape the papacy. He continued supporting Boniface's German mission.
