Al-Walid I (c. 674–715) was the sixth Umayyad caliph, ruling from 705 to 715, during whose reign the caliphate reached its greatest territorial extent. His governors and commanders extended Muslim rule into the Iberian Peninsula, Sind in the Indian subcontinent, and Transoxiana in Central Asia. He was also a major patron of building projects, commissioning the Great Mosque of Damascus and the rebuilding of the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina before his death in 715.
