Yazid I

Yazid I (c. 646–683) was the second caliph of the Umayyad dynasty, ruling from Damascus from 680 to 683 after succeeding his father Muawiya I. His reign is best known for the Battle of Karbala in 680, in which Husayn ibn Ali, a grandson of Muhammad, and his followers were killed by Umayyad forces, an event of lasting significance in the later Sunni-Shia divide. His government also faced the revolt of Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr in the Hijaz and unrest in Medina, leaving the dynasty in open conflict at his death in 683.
