Itzamnaaj K'awiil (Ruler 2)

673 CE726 CE · Dos Pilas

Itzamnaaj K'awiil, 'Ruler 2,' was the second king of Dos Pilas, reigning from 698 to 726. Continuing the expansionist course of the dynasty's founder, he extended the Petexbatun kingdom's power over neighboring polities through war and alliance. He was laid to rest in a vaulted tomb beneath Structure L5-1, one of the few Petexbatun royal burials to be excavated.
