Umar II (Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz)

Umar II, or Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (c. 682–720), was the eighth Umayyad caliph, ruling from 717 to 720. He is remembered in later tradition for administrative and fiscal reforms, including efforts to standardize taxation and to extend to non-Arab Muslim converts (the mawali) fiscal treatment closer to that of Arab Muslims. Muslim historians often single him out as an unusually pious ruler among the Umayyads; his short reign ended with his death in 720.
