Marwan I

Marwan I (c. 623–685) was the fourth Umayyad caliph and the founder of the dynasty's Marwanid branch, ruling briefly in 684–685. He came to power during the civil war known as the Second Fitna, after the death of the young caliph Muawiya II left the dynasty's hold on Syria in doubt. His victory at the Battle of Marj Rahit in 684 restored Umayyad authority in Syria and Egypt and secured the succession within his own line before he died in 685.
