Jasaw Chan K'awiil I (Ruler A)
?–734 CE · Tikal
Jasaw Chan K'awiil I, 'Ruler A,' took the throne of Tikal in 682 and revived the kingdom after a long period of decline under Calakmul's shadow. In 695 he defeated the Snake king of Calakmul in a decisive battle, breaking its hegemony and restoring Tikal to preeminence in the central lowlands. He rebuilt the ceremonial heart of the city and was entombed in the great pyramid known as Temple I, which still dominates Tikal's Great Plaza.
