Dingane

Dingane

?1840 CE · Zululand (Ulundi)

Dingane became king of the Zulu in 1828 after taking part in the assassination of his half-brother Shaka. His reign coincided with the arrival of Voortrekker parties in the region, and relations turned to open conflict, including the killing of the Boer leader Piet Retief and his party. After defeats to the trekkers and a challenge from his brother Mpande, Dingane lost power and died in 1840. His decade on the throne marked the Zulu kingdom's first sustained collision with expanding European settlement.
