Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an English poet, critic, and philosopher, and with William Wordsworth a founder of English Romanticism through their 1798 volume Lyrical Ballads. He is known for "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Kubla Khan," and "Christabel," and for the critical and philosophical prose of Biographia Literaria. He studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, lived at Nether Stowey and in the Lake District, and served as an administrator in Malta. He engaged deeply with German idealist philosophy and Anglican theology. He struggled for much of his life with opium use, spending his final years under medical care at Highgate, London, where he died in 1834.
