John Constable

John Constable was an English landscape painter associated with the Romantic movement. Born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, into a prosperous corn-merchant family, he trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1799. He drew his enduring subject matter from the countryside of the Stour Valley on the Suffolk-Essex border, a district his admirers later called "Constable country." Works such as "The Hay Wain" and his large six-foot canvases, together with hundreds of open-air oil sketches and cloud studies made at Hampstead, emphasized direct observation of weather and light. Elected a full Royal Academician in 1829, he worked until his death in London in 1837.
