Pedro I of Brazil

Pedro I (1798–1834) was a member of the Portuguese royal house of Braganza who declared Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822 and became the founder and first emperor of the Empire of Brazil. He granted a constitution in 1824 and reigned until political pressures led him to abdicate the Brazilian throne in 1831 in favor of his young son. He then returned to Europe, where he was also recognized as King Pedro IV of Portugal and fought to secure the Portuguese throne for his daughter. He died in Portugal in 1834.
