Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling was a German philosopher, one of the principal figures of German Idealism alongside Fichte and Hegel, with whom he shared a seminary room at Tübingen. Rising to a professorship at Jena while still in his twenties, he developed a Naturphilosophie (philosophy of nature) treating nature and mind as expressions of one underlying reality, and a "philosophy of identity." His later work turned toward questions of freedom, evil, mythology and revelation, distinguishing "negative" (purely rational) from "positive" (existence-oriented) philosophy. He taught at Jena, Würzburg, Munich, Erlangen and Berlin, influencing Romanticism and later existential thought.
