Al-Adil I
1145 CE–1218 CE · Cairo
Al-Adil I (1145-1218) was a brother of Saladin, known to the Crusaders as Saphadin, who served the dynasty as a leading commander and administrator before becoming sultan of Egypt and Syria in 1200. He reunified much of the Ayyubid realm that had fragmented among Saladin's heirs after 1193. His reign was generally marked by efforts to maintain stability and trade with the Crusader states. He died in 1218 during the opening of the Fifth Crusade and was succeeded by his son al-Kamil.
