Pope Urban III
?–1187 CE · Milan
A Milanese of the Crivelli family, Urban III carried into the papacy a deep grievance against Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, whose forces had devastated Milan a generation earlier. Retaining the archbishopric of Milan even as pope, he resisted imperial encroachments, and relations sharply deteriorated over the marriage of Frederick's son Henry to Constance of Sicily and over disputed ecclesiastical revenues and appointments. Frederick blockaded the Alpine passes, leaving Urban isolated. He spent his short reign at Verona and Ferrara rather than Rome. According to tradition he died at Ferrara in 1187, reportedly grieved by news of the disastrous Christian defeat at Hattin in the Holy Land.
