Pope Gregory VIII
?–1187 CE · Samnium
Born Alberto di Morra at Benevento, Gregory VIII was an elderly, austere cardinal and longtime papal chancellor when elected in October 1187. His pontificate lasted under two months but is remembered for a decisive act: responding to the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin after the catastrophe at Hattin, he issued the bull Audita tremendi, which summoned Christendom to the Third Crusade and called for penance and reform as well as arms. He also sought to mend the bitter rift with Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to unite Christian rulers behind the crusade. Gregory died at Pisa in December 1187 while pursuing that effort.
