Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Netherlandish Renaissance painter and printmaker active in the Habsburg Netherlands. He registered as a master in the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke around 1551, then traveled through France and Italy, crossing the Alps, whose landscapes shaped his later panoramas. Back in Antwerp he designed prints for the publisher Hieronymus Cock before settling in Brussels in 1563. His works depict peasant life, proverbs, seasonal landscapes, and biblical scenes rendered in contemporary settings. He founded a dynasty of painters; his sons Pieter the Younger and Jan the Elder continued and copied his output. He died in Brussels in 1569.
