Cosijopii I (Don Juan Cortés Cosijopii)

Cosijopii I, son of King Cosijoeza, was the last sovereign ruler of the Zapotec kingdom based at Tehuantepec in the Isthmus of Oaxaca. After the Spanish conquest he was baptized as Don Juan Cortés and governed his people as a colonial-era cacique, retaining much local authority. Late in life he was accused of secretly maintaining ancestral Zapotec rites and tried by the Inquisition, dying in 1563 as the Zapotec royal line passed away.
