Selim II
1524 CE–1574 CE · Constantinople
Selim II was an Ottoman ruler and son of Suleiman I who came to the throne in 1566. During his reign the empire conquered Cyprus from Venice in 1570–1571, but an allied Christian fleet destroyed much of the Ottoman navy at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Day-to-day government rested heavily on his capable grand vizier, Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. He died in 1574.
