William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor. Baptized in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564, he moved to London, where by the 1590s he was writing for and acting with the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later the King's Men, and held a share in the Globe Theatre. His body of work comprises some thirty-eight plays spanning comedy, history, and tragedy, alongside 154 sonnets and narrative poems. Works including Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet were first collected in the 1623 First Folio. He retired to Stratford in his later years and died there in April 1616, and remains among the most widely performed and studied writers in English.
