El Greco
1541 CE–1614 CE · Painter · Candia (Heraklion), Crete
El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in Venetian Crete, trained first as a post-Byzantine icon painter in the Cretan school. He moved to Venice around 1567 and then to Rome, absorbing the color of Titian and the monumental forms of Michelangelo and Raphael. By 1577 he settled permanently in Toledo, Spain, where he signed works in Greek and produced religious paintings and portraits marked by elongated figures, compressed space, and expressive color. Major works include "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" and "View of Toledo." Largely neglected after his death, his art was reassessed in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
