Suleiman the Magnificent

Suleiman the Magnificent (1494–1566) was the longest-reigning Ottoman sultan, ruling from 1520, and in Turkish tradition is called Kanuni, 'the Lawgiver,' for his reform and codification of imperial law. Under him the Ottoman Empire reached the height of its power and cultural achievement. His campaigns brought Belgrade, Rhodes, and much of Hungary under Ottoman rule and extended naval power across the Mediterranean. His reign is remembered as a golden age of Ottoman administration, architecture, and letters.
