Henry Hudson
c. 1565 CE–c. 1611 CE · Explorer · London (presumed birthplace and home port)
Henry Hudson was an English navigator active in the early 1600s, remembered for four northern voyages seeking a passage to Asia. Almost nothing is documented of his early life; he enters the record in 1607, hired by the Muscovy Company. Sailing the Hopewell (1607, 1608), he probed Arctic ice; in 1609, under the Dutch East India Company aboard the Halve Maen, he explored the river later named for him. On his final voyage (1610–1611), commanding the Discovery, he entered the bay that bears his name. After a hard winter, his crew mutinied and set Hudson, his son, and seven others adrift in James Bay; they were never seen again.
