K'inich Janaab' Pakal I (Pakal the Great)
603 CE–683 CE · Palenque
K'inich Janaab' Pakal I, 'Pakal the Great,' took the throne of Palenque (B'aakal) in 615 at the age of twelve and reigned sixty-eight years, one of the longest documented reigns in world history. He restored the kingdom after earlier defeats and commissioned much of its finest architecture, including the Palace and the Temple of the Inscriptions, built to house his own tomb. Rediscovered intact in 1952, his carved sarcophagus made him the best-known of all Maya kings.
