Johannes Brahms

Johannes Brahms was a German composer and pianist of the Romantic era. Born in Hamburg in 1833 to a working musician's family, he trained early as a pianist and was championed by Robert and Clara Schumann. He worked as a court musician in Detmold and led a women's choir he founded in Hamburg before moving to Vienna, which gradually became his permanent home and where he directed choral and orchestral societies and composed prolifically. His output spans four symphonies, concertos, chamber music, songs, piano works, and the large-scale German Requiem. Rooted in Classical forms and counterpoint yet harmonically inventive, his music was contrasted in his day with that of Wagner and Liszt. He died in Vienna in 1897.
