Queen Victoria

Victoria became queen of the United Kingdom in 1837 and reigned until 1901, one of the longest reigns in British history, which gave its name to the Victorian era. Her reign coincided with the height of the British Empire, rapid industrial and scientific advance, and expanding parliamentary government. In 1876 she was proclaimed Empress of India. Her marriage to Prince Albert and their large family linked her to many of Europe's royal houses, earning her the nickname 'grandmother of Europe.'
