Wanli Emperor

The Wanli Emperor (Zhu Yijun, 1563-1620) was the longest-reigning emperor of China's Ming dynasty, on the throne from 1572 to 1620. His early years saw effective administration and fiscal reform under the grand secretary Zhang Juzheng, and his government won the costly Imjin War defending Korea against Japanese invasion. In his later decades, however, he largely withdrew from governing and refused to attend to official business, a prolonged neglect that many historians link to the administrative decay and factional strife preceding the dynasty's fall.
