Pope Paul V
1552 CE–1621 CE · Rome
Born Camillo Borghese in Rome, Paul V was a canon lawyer who became a vigorous defender of papal authority. His pontificate opened with a fierce jurisdictional clash with the Republic of Venice, the Interdict of 1606, in which he placed the city under interdict over Church rights, a dispute eventually mediated. He completed the facade and nave of St. Peter's Basilica, his name inscribed across its front, and enriched Rome with the Acqua Paola aqueduct and Borghese patronage. During his reign the Roman Inquisition issued its 1616 admonition to Galileo regarding Copernican astronomy, a moment central to later debates over science and the Church.
