Munmu of Silla

Munmu of Silla (626-681) was the thirtieth king of the Korean kingdom of Silla, reigning from 661 to 681, and is generally regarded as the first ruler of the Unified Silla period. Continuing the alliance with Tang China begun under his father, he completed the conquest of Goguryeo in 668, following the earlier fall of Baekje, to bring the peninsula under Silla control. When the Tang then sought to dominate Korea directly, Munmu waged the Silla-Tang War and expelled Chinese forces by 676, securing the first lasting unification of the Korean states.
