Béla Bartók

Béla Bartók was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and ethnomusicologist. Trained at the Royal Hungarian Academy of Music in Budapest, where he later taught piano from 1907 to 1934, he undertook extensive fieldwork with Zoltán Kodály collecting and transcribing Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, and other folk music, work that shaped modern ethnomusicology. He absorbed these folk idioms into a distinctive compositional language spanning string quartets, concertos, the opera "Duke Bluebeard's Castle," and the "Concerto for Orchestra." In 1940 he emigrated to the United States amid the war in Europe. He died in New York City in 1945.
