Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse was a French painter, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor whose work spanned more than half a century. Trained in law before turning to art, he studied in Paris under Gustave Moreau. Around 1905 he became the leading figure of Fauvism, a style marked by intense, non-naturalistic color and bold, simplified form. Over following decades he developed a distinctive vocabulary of flowing line, flat pattern and luminous color across painting, book illustration and sculpture. In his final years, limited by illness, he produced large cut-paper compositions and designed the Chapelle du Rosaire at Vence. He died in Nice in 1954.
