Victor Emmanuel III

Victor Emmanuel III was King of Italy from 1900 until his abdication in 1946, and his reign spanned both world wars and the Fascist era. In 1922 he appointed Benito Mussolini prime minister after the Fascist March on Rome, and he retained the throne through the two decades of Fascist rule, signing the antisemitic racial laws of 1938 into force. He dismissed Mussolini in 1943 as Italy's war effort collapsed. His association with Fascism discredited the monarchy; he abdicated in 1946 in favor of his son shortly before a referendum abolished the monarchy, and he died in exile in 1947.
