Joseph Goldstein (b. 1944) is among the first generation of American-born insight (vipassanā) teachers. Drawn to Buddhism while in the Peace Corps in Thailand and through subsequent study in India, he co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, in 1975 with Jack Kornfield and Sharon Salzberg, and remains a central guiding teacher there. He is known for systematic teaching of mindfulness rooted in the Satipaṭṭhāna framework and for several influential books on insight practice. He continues to teach.
